In this set of pictures we see the Green Brittle Star attempting to lure the soft meaty portion of this snail from its shell. He is obviously hungry we could presume as it had been 5 or 6 days since I had fed him. I already have found a shell without its snail I had thought it died originally but after this display of cunning hunting ability, I suspect the other snail was dinner for this mischievous brittle star. There were 6 attempts in all by the snail to reach for the rock on the left of its shell. Not seen here are pictures of the brittle star actually turning the snail over in place. The starfish likes to make this particular cave his home, it is no wonder with the protection and hunting grounds. Above this area is the cave roof where victims are likely to fall from. Eventually I had to let my non-scientific side intervene and I fed the brittle star two small (live) ghost shrimp. He quickly made a meal of these. I also nudged the snail closer to the rock so it could reach without being enssnarled by te long spiny arms of the Green Brittle Starfish. |
